Dress for winter weather in layers, and choose the outer layer by how wet the snow is and how long you will stand still. Fleece-lined softshell pants suit cold, dry days on the move. Insulated waterproof snow pants suit wet or deep snow and long waits. Battery-heated gear adds warmth when layers are not enough.
The guides in this section compare the layers that matter most in a storm, from the trail to the driveway.
Fleece-lined or insulated snow pants
Fleece-lined hiking pants pair a stretchy, water-repellent softshell outer with a soft fleece inner, so one layer covers cold, dry days. Stio describes softshells as water resistant with a DWR finish, less effective in heavy rain or wet conditions. For wet snow and long waits, insulated waterproof snow pants are the better pick. Fleece-lined vs insulated snow pants matches each pair to the activity, and fleece-lined hiking pants explains how to choose by lining weight and shell fabric, then by fit.
Whatever the pants, skip cotton. The Washington Trails Association says cotton loses its warmth when wet and dries slowly, and names jeans and sweatpants. In wind, the cold bites harder: the National Weather Service says exposed skin can freeze in 30 minutes at a wind chill of -19°F.

Battery-heated jackets and gloves
Heated gear runs on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and usually has three heat settings. Runtime depends on the setting: Milwaukee lists 12 hours on low, 6 on medium and 3 on high for its M12 TOUGHSHELL jacket. ORORO notes its runtimes are measured at 77°F, and colder weather and battery age shorten them.
| Heat setting | Milwaukee M12 TOUGHSHELL runtime |
|---|---|
| Low | 12 hours |
| Medium | 6 hours |
| High | 3 hours |
Battery care is part of the purchase. CPSC has warned against using loose lithium-ion cells separated from battery packs, and in its 2025 warnings on heated gloves and insoles it said not to put the batteries in the trash or curbside recycling. Before you buy, search the brand and model on cpsc.gov for recalls. Our heated gear guide compares runtimes and sizing.
