Heated Jackets, Vests and Gloves: Battery Life, Fit and Safety

Heated jackets, vests and gloves run on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and usually offer three heat settings. The maker pages below list 2 to 3 hours on high and 7 to 12 hours on low for jackets and vests. Choose by battery runtime, heat zones and fit, and charge with what the maker supplies.

This guide sticks to the questions that decide whether heated gear works for you: how long it stays warm, how it should fit and how to handle the battery safely. It does not rank brands. How long does a heated jacket battery last?

Runtime depends on two things: the heat setting and the battery’s capacity. Here is what five maker pages list.

Two patterns stand out. On the four models that list both figures, low heat runs about three to four times longer than high. And gloves carry a much smaller battery than a vest (14.8Wh against 35.4Wh on the ORORO pair), which is why glove runtimes run shorter.

Why real runtime is often shorter

ORORO’s help center says its runtimes were measured at 77°F (25°C), and that colder weather, battery age and usage habits may affect performance. In a storm, expect less than the box says. Starting on high and dropping to low once you are warm stretches a charge.

Runtime is also quoted for a specific pack. DEWALT ties its 7-hour figure to the 20V MAX compact 1.5Ah battery, so a different pack will give a different result. If you already own a tool brand’s batteries, a heated jacket from that brand can share them, since Milwaukee says its M12 heated gear is compatible with all M12 batteries.

Jacket, vest or gloves: which heated piece fits your day?

Each piece suits a different kind of cold.

A heated vest warms the core and layers easily under a coat. Milwaukee’s AXIS vest and ORORO’s Classic vest both heat the chest or pockets plus the back. That makes it a flexible piece for shoveling, commuting or sitting in a cold house.

A heated jacket works as the outer shell. Milwaukee describes its TOUGHSHELL and AXIS jackets as wind and water resistant with a DWR finish, so they can stand alone on a dry, cold day.

Heated gloves target the hands, which a vest does not reach. ORORO’s Buffalo gloves heat the back of the hands and the fingers and have touchscreen fingertips on the thumb and index finger. They make sense for anyone who scrapes windshields or walks a dog before sunrise. A spare pair of ordinary gloves still belongs in your winter car emergency kit, since a heated pair is only as good as its last charge.

How should a heated jacket or vest fit?

Fit matters more with heated gear than with an ordinary coat, because the pads only help if the garment sits where they are meant to.

ORORO’s sizing guide gives the clearest advice:

1. Measure in underwear or close-fitting clothes, not jeans or sweats, because “it DOES make a difference.”
2. For jackets, measure chest, waist, hip and sleeve length. For vests, measure shoulder width instead of sleeves.
3. If you fall between two sizes, choose the larger one.
4. Think about layers. ORORO notes that winter may call for shirt and sweater layers underneath.

Cut also varies by style. ORORO says most of its men’s pieces are regular fit and its women’s styles are slim fit. Milwaukee describes its M12 heated hoodie as a standard fit and suggests sizing up for a more relaxed fit.

Are heated jackets and gloves safe?

They run on lithium-ion batteries, so the real safety questions are about the battery and the heating elements. CPSC warnings from 2025 show what can go wrong:

• Heated gloves. On July 31, 2025, CPSC warned consumers to stop using Velazzio Thermo1 battery heated gloves, which can overheat or develop hot spots. It cited 137 reported overheating incidents, including 119 burn injuries.
• Heated insoles. On July 10, 2025, CPSC warned consumers to stop using iHeat heated insoles because the internal battery can explode and ignite, even when the insoles are turned off. It reported 11 thermal events and eight burn injuries.

CPSC’s general battery guidance points the same way. Its lithium-ion charging advice, written for e-bikes and scooters, says to use only the charger provided with or recommended by the maker, and only replacement batteries tested and approved for the device. CPSC has also warned against using loose 18650 lithium-ion cells separated from battery packs, because they lack protection circuits. A heated vest should run on the battery pack its maker sells for it.

Can heated clothing keep you warm in a power outage?

It can help, because it warms your body rather than the room and needs no fuel or flame. The limit is charging. Some kits address that: DEWALT’s DCHJ060C1 kit includes a USB power source with two USB ports for charging phones, and ORORO says its Mini 5K battery charges over USB-C from standard 15W chargers. A charged power bank or battery power station can top up gear like this during an outage.

Heated clothing does not replace heating the house. If you need a heater, read space heaters in a power outage first for the CPSC clearance and cord rules.

What about base layers and snow pants?

A heated vest warms the core, but legs lose heat too, especially while shoveling or waiting at a bus stop. There are two routes.

Heated pants. ORORO’s help center lists its Dual Power pants at 5 hours on high, 9 on medium and 16 on low with its standard batteries.

Insulated snow pants. Fleece-lined snow pants add warmth with no battery at all. Moosehill, one maker of them, lists these details on its own site. This is not a claim that they are the best option, only a sourced example of what to compare:

• The men’s SnowVenture M007 comes in S to XXXL. Moosehill lists a 95% polyester, 5% spandex outer and a 100% polyester fleece inner in a 280 GSM fabric, with four pockets. Moosehill says that weight provides warmth above 0°C (32°F), so plan extra layers for colder days.
• The women’s SnowVenture W039 comes in sizes 4 to 16 with a 29-inch short or 31-inch regular inseam. Moosehill says snaps at the hem open the leg by 7 to 8 cm to fit over boots.

Whatever you pick, compare the inseam, the waist adjustment and the maker’s stated temperature range against the weather where you live.
